I am pleased to invite you to the 2009 Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference, which will be held July 20-23 in scenic Monterey. Our venue this year is the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort and Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course. This recently renovated property will amply accommodate the needs of our large group.
We convene the conference at a difficult time for the nation, which is reflected in our program theme, “Navigating Through Turbulent Times.” The general sessions include presentations on the world economic downturn, legal issues generated by anxiety over the widespread belief in global warming, the interplay between the courts and the media, and potential threats posed by the Internet and new technologies to the individual and to national security. The program is being developed by the Conference Executive Committee, led by Chair Kelli L. Sager, Esq., of the Central District of California, and Program Chair Chief District Judge Irma E. Gonzalez of the Southern District of California.

The conference also provides judges with many informal opportunities to exchange ideas, meet new colleagues, renew acquaintances and hear about what is happening throughout the circuit. It increases contacts with our lawyer representatives, whom we rely upon throughout the year to serve on circuit committees and perform other important functions. This interaction enables us to consider new initiatives to improve the administration of justice in our courts.
Finally, anyone who has visited Monterey, including those attending our last conference there in 2004, know of its natural beauty and many attractions. So there will be plenty for you and your families to do when not busy with the conference.
Start planning now. The deadline for hotel reservations is April 13, 2009. A summary of the conference schedule and business meetings is included here to assist you in making travel plans. Please also review the information about hotel accommodations and arrangements for air and ground transportation.
